  12. Quick Start:
  13. =============================================================================

  15. 1. Select "New" from the "File" menu to create a new piece.
  16.  
  17.    The main central area with the big "Koan X" picture is where you do your
  18.    mixing. The vertical axis usually represents volume, and the horizontal axis
  19.    represents the pan (otherwise known as stereo position).
  20.  
  21. 2. Drag icons ('templates') into your new piece from the right hand
  22.    side of the screen. Select "Groups" or press the big black buttons next to
  23.    the template icons, to reveal more templates that you can use.
  24.  
  25. 3. To start the music playing, either press the play button on the top panel,
  26.    or press the space bar.
  27.  
  28. 4. Select the icons with your mouse and drag them around: moving them up and
  29.    down, left and right to create your own KoanMix
  30.  
  31. 5. To stop the music playing, either press the stop button on the top panel,
  32.    or press the space bar.

  35. look at the Koan X Coach, or why not browse the extensive on-line help !

  86. Creative Labs AWE64 / SB64 / AWE32 / SB32 owners :

  89. Please note that at time of press, we have been advised by Creative Labs
  90. that SoundFonts are *not* supported by the current Creative driver pack for
  91. NT 4. Please contact Creative Labs for the latest word on whether or not
  92. they have a set of drivers that supports the use of AWEMAN.DLL under NT 4.

  95. EMU8710 Music Card

  98. The latest 32-bit Koan software (where the SKME is of version 2.04 or later)
  99. now includes seamless support for the EMU8710 Music Card !
  100.  
  101. This includes FULL SoundFont support (.SF2 files) !

  103. To use the features of this card, simply treat your Koan software just as
  104. though you were using a Creative Labs AWE64/32/SB64/SB32 soundcard.

  107. 16 bit/32 bit versions:
  108. =============================================================================

  110. The 32 bit versions of Koan X support a multi-threaded composer, which can
  111. be enabled through the Setup Dialog (View Setup off the menu). This option
  112. enables Koan to keep on composing, even when the graphical user interface is
  113. fully engaged by the user. Previously, if the user interface were stopped
  114. while waiting for user input, the music could stop being played after the
  115. Composer Reaction time (View Setup) had elapsed.  If you enable the
  116. multi-threading option, and later experience problems with multi-threaded
  117. operation, you may of course disable (and later re-enable) this option through
  118. the Setup Dialog.
  119.  
  120. The most likely problem with multithreading is that you might experience some
  121. lack of smoothness in the played music, when you have a small amount of
  122. physical memory available (e.g. less than 16 Megabytes of base physical
  123. memory, and / or many applications loaded).  If this is the case, simply
  124. disable the multithreading option.
  125.  
  126. The 32 bit versions are designed for use with either Windows 95 or Windows
  127. NT 4, or later.

  130. Cannot find MSACM.DLL ?
  131. =============================================================================

  133. If when using Koan X on Windows NT (or some other version of Windows) when
  134. attempting to do a WAV to record a WAV file, you get an error like "Cannot
  135. find MSACM.DLL", then just do either one of the following to fix your
  136. problem :
  137.  
  138. 1. Find msacm.dll on your system (e.g. under c:\winnt\system32), and copy
  139.    it into the directory in which you have installed Koan X.
  140. 2. Modify your system path, such that msacm.dll is found by Koan X.
  141.

  143. Problems recording WAV files in the right format ?
  144. =============================================================================
  145.  
  146. If you encounter the problem that you do not seem able to find an
  147. option to record to a WAV file using the right bandwidth, or if Stereo
  148. files do not seem to be an option, then you will need to review your
  149. system's "Codec" settings.
  150.  
  151. "Codec" is a word that is short for "Compression - Decompression". It
  152. refers to a type of software which both compresses and decompresses digital
  153. audio streams; and is used by the Windows system software as part of the
  154. process of generating WAV files. Essentially, WAV files are encoded
  155. following a particular Codec compression algorithm; they are decoded using
  156. the decompression part of the Codec.
  157.  
  158. To review the Audio Codecs available on a Windows 95 system, you will need
  159. to start Control Panel. Next, double-click the multimedia icon, click the
  160. Advanced tab on the Multimedia Properties dialog, and see what Audio
  161. Compression Codecs you have available.
  162.  
  163. Audio codecs on a typical machine might include the following :
  164.  
  165. Microsoft IMA ADPCM CODEC
  166. Microsoft ADPCM CODEC
  167. Microsoft GSM 6.10 Audio CODEC
  168. Microsoft CCITT G.711 A-Law and u-Law CODEC
  169. Microsoft Network Audio CODEC
  170. Microsoft PCM Converter
  171.  
  172. Note that they seem to be listed in priority order - the first one in our
  173. list here (Microsoft IMA ADPCM CODEC) might well be the one you want to
  174. appear at the top of the list, because it seems to provide a wide range of
  175. options.
  176.  
  177. The precise options available to you, will be dependent on the
  178. configuration of your machine's soundcard drivers and hardware. *Please*
  179. check the available formats and attributes, there is probably one there
  180. that meets your needs. If the format you require is not there, then please
  181. consult your soundcard manufacturer - SSEYO do not write or supply any
  182. CODEC software !
  183.  
  184. Incidentally, on Windows 95, you can confirm the recording format options
  185. made available to you by Koan X, by using the following method :
  186.  
  187. 1. Start the standard Windows sound recorder (Start | Program | Accessories |
  188.    Multimedia | Sound Recorder)
  189. 2. Select Edit | Audio Properties from the menu.
  190. 3. Select the "Preferred Quality" you want, and press the Customize button.
  191.  
  192. The dialog displayed next should be familiar to you, it is the same one
  193. called-up by Koan X ! You would expect to see exactly the same options as
  194. displayed to you by Koan X. These options are all those supplied with your
  195. system setup / soundcard pack, as discussed above.
